MOTS-C is a 16 amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome, specifically the 12S rRNA region, rather than by nuclear DNA. It has drawn sustained interest in the metabolic and mitochondrial biology literature, where it is studied for its association with AMPK pathway activity, cellular energy regulation, and mitochondrial to nuclear communication. Because it originates from mitochondrial DNA, MOTS-C is often grouped with a small class of mitochondrial derived peptides that researchers are still characterizing.
For labs already familiar with MOTS-C's place in that literature, the practical question when choosing a supplier isn't what the compound does. It's whether the material in the vial matches what the label claims, and whether that claim is backed by data.
MOTS-C is a short, specific peptide sequence, but synthesis quality still varies meaningfully across manufacturers. Truncated sequences, incomplete couplings, and degradation products can all pass as "MOTS-C" on a label without matching the intended structure. Two checks matter most before a batch reaches the bench:
Identity confirmation, using mass spectrometry and/or HPLC data to confirm the material matches the expected molecular structure, not just the name on the vial. Purity quantification, a stated purity percentage supported by chromatographic data rather than an unverified claim.
Without both, there is no reliable way to know whether a batch is research grade or whether it will introduce confounding variables into downstream results.
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) ties a specific batch to its test results. Before treating any COA as sufficient documentation, check that it includes:
Batch or lot number matching the product received Third party (not just in house) testing HPLC purity percentage Mass spectrometry identity confirmation Test date and testing laboratory name
A COA that is generic, undated, or not tied to a specific batch number is not a meaningful verification. It is marketing collateral.
